Winter Snow In New York City, USA by
Benjamin L.M. 2023.
Benjamin L.M. is from Adelaide, Australia, and is now based in New Jersey, USA. His interest in art came from American cartoons he saw on TV as a child, and then into his teens, his interest in art matured into fine art from the ‘millionaire-looking’ paintings of Salvador Dali he saw in a book while in high school. As an adult, he went to see the William S. Paley Collection in Australia on loan from MoMA in New York City, and his experience was "finished off and the deal was sealed" regarding the start of his artistic career and the pursuit of his true passion. He states, “Seeing actual paintings in the flesh for the first time changed my life instantly, I had no idea they would look so different from how they look in books. Paul Cézanne’s shimmering psychedelia, Pablo Picasso’s gentle and mysterious ghost touch from the rose period, Paul Gauguin in chunky all-colors, and then Francis Bacon’s messed up faces, my life was altered for the better within fifteen minutes of seeing these paintings. Photos in books can never do justice to seeing real art in the flesh, the paintings are alive on the walls.”
Soon after this pivotal moment, Benjamin L.M. dropped out of art university before attending even one day and jumped headfirst into becoming an Artist with "the sole quest for an all-out painting purpose that began and has never stopped.” In terms of the inspiration behind his works, he says "The paintings don’t come from a preconceived image, but from a fast title, then a fast drawing, then a fast painting. Each title, drawing, and painting comes from the mastermind before time or from a finite spontaneous human visual explosion – both are right. Paint, brushes and canvas are an ecstatic dance between chaos and control, destruction and renewal, struggle and transcendence."
Benjamin L.M. expresses a sense of freedom in his works when discussing his creative process. He says, "Bold color fields, frenetic marks, shifting textures, expansion and collapse, each work is in the process of breaking apart and reforming. The pieces move between figurative form, improvised abstraction or nature settings, forms emerge from the storm of movement, others dissolve into pure energy. Each painting is laid down on the studio floor into the raw canvas to be stretched later, these works refuse confinement, they exist as scrolls, living movements, a testament to freedom itself.”
This Painter has no set technique or medium he follows: "Working in acrylic, spray paint, oil stick, and gouache with no formal training and no fixed technique allows the medium to follow the emotion. Each painting is a surrender to the moment, a direct channeling of soul-thought-form.”
Regarding the inspiration behind this piece called
Winter Snow In New York City, USA Benjamin L.M. states, "Seeing snow in America was unlike anything I’d seen, we don’t have snow in Australia, so when I woke up to my first snow I rushed outside to see it and touch it. Exciting it was. What surprised me was the zero color in the landscape and sky, I had obviously seen snow scenes in books or movies before, but actually seeing it in the real was startling and different. I never expected to have a new appreciation for monotone grey scale colors. The way the sun gleams off the snow was a shade of light I’d never seen before that. I still love seeing snow."
The canvas is 36" x 54" in size and weighs about 1.6lbs. This original artwork is in excellent condition as it came to the gallery directly from the Artist’s studio in New Jersey. Please reference the photographs, as they are part of the description.
