Letters From Duke D’Orleans, Count D’Angoulême 1443 & 1447

A pair of letters from Charles the Duke of Orleans and his younger brother, John the Count of Angoulême. The letters appear to be signed by their secretaries and are on vellum. The larger letter was written in 1443, and seems to relate to Charles securing the release of his brother from English captivity (which would happen in 1444). The Duke of Burgundy is mentioned in the letter, who would help Charles arrange the release of his brother after helping to free Charles himself in 1440.

The second letter is a certification from the secretary Pierre du Caves for the Count of Angoulême, saying that the payment has been made for the expenses of a trip.

The two letters are in relatively good condition for their age, however, they have been folded in half and it appears that they have been cut from larger pieces of paper.

Approximate size: 7" x 6" x 0.5" (in their current folded state)

Approximate weight: 0.5 oz
